Summer drive-in workshop descriptions
Student Retention Analysis Using SAS: Data Preparation and Exploration
Part 1, Morning Session, 9:30 AM
Learn how to using the SAS system gets the most out of your data. Don't let the survey results go it alone. We'll show you practical SAS code that merges NSSE findings with institutional data as we investigate possible indices for predicting retention. Using multiple sources of data tends to bring a richness to results and interpretation that provides depth to analysis.
This workshop will begin the process and concentrate on merging the data sources and conducting some initial data exploration. Topics discussed will include:
- reading Microsoft Excel workbooks
- using the SQL procedure to join data tables and create new variables
- using the DATA step to manipulate data
- conducting data exploration with the MEANS and FREQ procedures
Creating and Using Microsoft Excel Pivot Tables
Dr. Scott Jenkins, UNC-General Administration, 9:30 AM
Learn how to use the simple power of Microsoft Excel Pivot Tables to quickly and easily organize, summarize, and analyze your data to reveal hidden meanings.
- Pivot Tables I: What's So Great About PivotTable Reports (Excel 2007)
- Pivot Tables II: Swing into Action with PivotTable Reports (Excel 2007)
- Pivot Tables I: What's So Great About PivotTable Reports (Excel 2003)
- Excel 2007: Get Started with PivotTable Reports
- Excel PivotTables Made Easy Brochure

Assessment
Dr. Allen DuPont, North Carolina State University, 1:30 PM
This interactive workshop will guide participants through the development of an assessment process, including learning outcomes, measures and methods, and analysis and use of results. The focus will be on academic programs, but general education and academic support programs will also be considered. These processes will then be considered in light of the SACS Criteria.
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants should be able to outline the critical elements of an effective assessment process, evaluate the assessment processes at their own institutions, and critically consider those processes in relation to accreditation expectations.
Student Retention Analysis Using SAS: Data Analysis
Part 2, Afternoon Session, 1:30 PM
This workshop will begin where the Data Preparation and Exploration leaves off. With the data ready to analyze, the workshop will begin with a review of statistical hypothesis testing. Two sample t-tests and chi-square tests for association will be used to explore possible relationships between the various pieces of information and student retention. The workshop will finish with a review of logistic regression and building a multiple regression model to predict student retention.
The intention of this workshop is to review statistical techniques and demonstrate how those techniques can be accomplished in the SAS programming environment.
